Dramatic District Elections

June 22, 2019 7:10 PM
Congratulations to re-elected Mid Suffolk District Councillors John Field, Penny Otton and Mike Norris as well as newly elected Steve Phillips and Keith Scarff. A big thank you to all those who stood as candidates.
Mid Suffolk District Council experienced one of the most dramatic election counts in recent history as a single vote effectively decided the outcome of the election. The Tories held the St Peter ward in Stowmarket against the Lib Dems by just ONE vote and as a result the Conservatives (16) and Independents (1) hold 17 seats while the Greens (12) and Liberal Democrats (5) also hold 17 seats if they unite.
The biggest shock came when the Conservative council leader Nick Gowrley lost his Combs Ford seat to Liberal Democrat Keith Scarff.

Councillor Penny Otton hands over the leadership of the Liberal Democrat's to Councillor John Field at the Mid Suffolk offices following the elections on May the 2nd.

Penny said "Now with a council in no overall control it is important the Lib Dems will have a significant influence in how the council is run and the decisions that it makes. John has a lot of experience and fully understands the financial situation and will be excellent at holding the Conservative administration to account."
